A Beacon of Welcome: The Candle in the Window at Christmas

A taper candle seen through a window

Placing a candle in the window on Christmas Eve is an Irish tradition - and it's one that embodies the heart of Irish hospitality. It's a simple gesture that carries layers of historic significance stretching back centuries -and has a new resonance in our modern era.

A tradition rooted in faith

Traditionally, the youngest child of the house (preferably one named Mary or John) would light the candle. More than just a festive decoration, the Christmas candle is a powerful symbol of welcome. The single candle in the window offered a signal to passing travelers that they would find shelter and warmth within. It was also meant to symbolically light the way for Mary and Joseph on their way to Bethlehem, where Jesus woudld be born.

The custom may have had its roots in the oppressive Penal Laws era (1691-1778), when practicing Catholicism was dangerous. In a quiet act of resistance, families would signal to traveling priests that their home would be a safe haven to them, where they could celebrate Mass.

A modern symbol to the diaspora

President Mary Robinson beautifully revived this tradition in a powerful modern context. In 1990, she placed a lamp in the window of Áras an Uachtaráin, the presidential residence, as a symbolic beacon to Ireland's emigrants and the many millions of descendants of emigrants of the past. The light represented a promise: no matter where Irish people are in the world, there is always a welcome waiting for them. Subsequent presidents continued the tradition, and the lamp still shines today, visible to all who pass and serving as a reminder to all those abroad that they are remembered in Ireland and are always welcome home.

Families will continue the custom this Christmas as ever - and the light continues to symbolize the hope, welcome, and connection that is at the heart of Ireland's rich cultural heritage.
