Ayr is a town situated on the southwest coast of Scotland. It is the historic county town of Ayrshire and the name Ayr can be traced back to a pre-Celtic word meaning "watercourse" or "strong river" as the town is situated on the River Ayr. A medieval market town and a well known port, it is also the birthplace in the suburb of Alloway of the Scottish poet Robert Burns.
