Top Five Reasons to Visit Scotland

  1. It’s a photographer’s dream

Scotland has some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. A few highlights include:

    • The Rannoch Moor

One of the last remaining wildernesses in Europe, the moor is an area of blanket bog, rivers and rocky outcrops, with a wealth of wildlife.

    • Loch Ness

Sure, you’ve heard of the monster, but there’s a lot more to Britain’s largest lake than Nessie. Take a cruise and enjoy the splendid scenery.

    • Jacobite Steam Train and Glenfinnan Viaduct

This famed train route, featured in Harry Potter, is one of the most picturesque railway lines in the world.

  2. You can hobnob with Royals, or at least visit their homes

Scotland is rich in royal connections – a few of our favorites:

    • Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is Scotland’s most iconic attraction. Located on an enormous rock looming over the heart of the capital city, this 12th century castle houses Scotland’s Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, the National War Museum of Scotland and much more.

    • Urquhart Castle

Situated magnificently on the shores of Loch Ness, these spectacular ruins reflect 1000 years of history.

    • Royal Yacht Britannia

It’s not a castle, but this vessel served as the temporary floating home of The Queen for decades. Now docked in Edinburgh, the Britannia hosted official receptions, glamorous state visits, Royal honeymoons and family holidays.

  3. Scotland knows how to throw a party

Edinburgh is not just the home of spectacular architecture: these gorgeous buildings provide a backdrop for some of the finest pageantry and partying in the world.

    • The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place in the summer on Edinburgh Castle’s Esplanade

It features the British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and international military bands in thrilling displays of pageantry and music.

    • Hogmanay is Scotland’s winter-wonderland celebration of New Year’s Eve – and Edinburgh’s street party is one of the largest celebrations in the world.

  4. It’s the home of whisky!

They’ve been distilling whisky in Scotland for hundreds of years, with the earliest official record of the process appearing back in 1494. Today, there are over 120 distilleries across Scotland, and many of them are open for visitors. The industry is divided into five regions: Campbeltown, Highland, Islay, Lowland, and Speyside – and, as with wine, regional differences make a difference in the taste.

  1. Its islands are magical

Scotland’s breathtaking islands are fascinating, with plenty of culture to explore. We particularly love the Outer Hebrides. These islands in western Scotland are not only remote, isolated and beautiful, but steeped in traditional culture. Try some of the traditional seafood, visit a smokehouse, watch weavers craft beautiful Harris tweed, or just listen to the lilt of the Gaelic-speakers around you. There is so much to explore.

CIE tours made everything extremely easy. We booked online and had them arrange our flights and transportation to and from the airport. When we finally met up with the tour group a day late, due to bad weather and flight delays, we found out that we had the best guide and driver, Colm Clarke. He was AMAZING- very accommodating and cheerful throughout the whole tour. He kept us informed and entertained all at the same time. I've taken several tours and he surpassed any guides I've dealt with by far. The stops and sights planned are excellent and truly give you a taste of Ireland and Scotland. I found the hotels to be comfortable with good service. I cannot stress how much I enjoyed this tour and how hard I;m working to get back to Ireland as soon as possible. Of course, I'll be booking with CIE again and requesting Colm (Seriously, he is the BEST).
I had a great travel agent that organised everything
Friendly and informative tour guides, nice accomodations, we saw so much while we were there!
