Our Top Picks in Eastern Europe

Our Eastern European vacations are filled with numerous historic sites, cultural landmarks, and locations of natural beauty to explore. Each journey is created to pique a traveler’s curiosity and delight all the senses. With so many options to choose from, you’re sure to find the intriguing journey that’s right for you. Take a look at a few of our favorite places to see in Eastern Europe:

1. Prague:

The architecture of Prague is unbeatable. Not only did it survive World War II relatively unscathed, it also escaped rebuilding efforts that were fashionable across European capitals in the 17th and 18th centuries. It’s now a fascinating mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture that is unmatched anywhere else in Europe.  Tour the Royal Castle of Hradcany – said to be the world’s largest castle, with a history stretching back to the 9th century – and stand on Charles Bridge, built around 1400 and one of the oldest European bridges still in use, for a glimpse of this city’s historic past.

2. Moscow:

Russia’s capital is a bustling, historic city known for its iconic architecture. See the colorful, multi-domed St Basil’s Cathedral and many of the Moscow’s 800 other churches. Visit Red Square, an important meeting place for centuries, and see the many impressive buildings that surround it, including the Kremlin, which began as a medieval fortress in the 12th century.

3. Vienna:

Home to Mozart and Beethoven, Vienna is a place where travelers can still enjoy the café society made famous by artists and intellectuals over a century ago. And of course you’ll want to try the food the city is known for – most notably, Wiener Schnitzel, a veal dish and Sacher Torte, a chocolate cake with a thin layer of apricot.

4. Budapest:

The capital city of Hungary, Budapest sits on the Danube, Europe’s second-largest river and a World Heritage Site. An important area of settlement since Roman times, Budapest today is filled with thermal baths, Art Nouveau architecture, great nightlife, gorgeous parks and an interesting foodie scene.

5. Dubrovnik:

This Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea is famous for its fortification walls, complete with turrets and towers, dating back to medieval times – and used as a location in Game of Thrones. An extremely important trading city during the 15th and 16th centuries, Dubrovnik is today known as one of the most beautiful towns in the Mediterranean. As George Bernard Shaw once said, “Those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik.”

CIE tours made everything extremely easy. We booked online and had them arrange our flights and transportation to and from the airport. When we finally met up with the tour group a day late, due to bad weather and flight delays, we found out that we had the best guide and driver, Colm Clarke. He was AMAZING- very accommodating and cheerful throughout the whole tour. He kept us informed and entertained all at the same time. I've taken several tours and he surpassed any guides I've dealt with by far. The stops and sights planned are excellent and truly give you a taste of Ireland and Scotland. I found the hotels to be comfortable with good service. I cannot stress how much I enjoyed this tour and how hard I;m working to get back to Ireland as soon as possible. Of course, I'll be booking with CIE again and requesting Colm (Seriously, he is the BEST).
