Discovering Delightful Derry and Donegal - CIE Tours

Discovering Delightful Derry and Donegal

CIE TOURS - April 17, 2017

We are flying through this trip! The guests and I are floored by everything that we’ve seen so far and eager for everything yet to come. From the Giant’s Causeway, we trekked over to Derry, or as they call it in Northern Ireland, Londonderry. Our coach took us on a city tour of Derry and it was fascinating to learn about Northern Ireland’s past.

As a devoted Star Wars fan, one stop that I found particularly exhilarating was our drive through Malin Head. This scenic stop where we stopped for lunch and Irish coffee is the location for some scenes in the Star Wars movie being released in December! *Girlish squeals*

Our walking tour guide, Rownan, took us through the streets of Derry and shared his story along with Northern Ireland’s. While walking through the streets and taking a scenic picture of the Peace Bridge, I stumbled upon a resident of Derry walking his dog, Judy (named after Judi Dench). Naturally, I needed to pet this dog. The dog’s owner talked to me and shared his appreciation for visitors to Northern Ireland and bringing tourism to this part of the Emerald Isle.

Our adventure continued as we left our hotel in Derry and stopped at Donegal Castle. Our guests enjoyed the tour of the castle and exploring the rooms and history of the beautiful structure. The castle conveniently sits right in town which allowed us to explore some of the shops and enjoy an Irish coffee while witnessing a skilled Irishman weave a tweed jacket. Our female guests were in retail heaven exploring the shops and walked away with hats, jewelry, jackets, sweaters, scarves, and bored husbands.

With our bags full of tweed and our guests looking even more stylish than they already were, we made our way to our final destination for the day: Galway! *Ed Sheeren plays in the background*

Our walking tour of the city of Galway was graced with beautiful weather and music in the streets. I have been told by many people that Galway is their favorite city in Ireland and I can see why. The pedestrian streets were packed with sweater shops, jewelry, pubs, cafes, music, and smiling faces. By the Spanish Arch next to the water, I felt like I could’ve sat there for hours listening to the bustling city and the streaming water. Give me a good book and a view of Galway and I would be set!

Our first day in Galway would not be complete without traditional Irish music and dancing. As luck would have it, at the theater next to our hotel, there was a performance involving world champion dancers and Irish music that you can’t help but tap your feet to. Truly a great way to end a day in Ireland!

We have since left our hotel in Galway and are on day 24 of our Grand Tour. I sit here eagerly typing away on a CIE coach as we make our way to the cliffs of Moher! Seeing these cliffs has always been on my bucket list as well as others guests on tour with me. I’ll update you soon on our journey and the happenings of the Grand Tour of Britain and Ireland.

CIE you there!
